Keil’s Pharmacy in Montclair

Keil’s Pharmacy has given back to the Montclair community for over 80 years.

First opened in 1933 by Hermann Keil, Keil’s Pharmacy has become a staple in the town of Montclair, N.J.. During that time in New Jersey, it was common to see new businesses opened in flourishing locations such as Newark, Orange and Irvington. Hermann Keil was considered a pioneer for bringing this type of business to the rather rural community that Montclair was at the time.

In the early 1970s, when Keil retired, his son, Stuart Keil, took over the business. Under this new ownership, the store’s features were diversified to meet the needs of the developing neighborhood.  Keil’s was always a pharmacy first; however, Stuart Keil added a soda counter, an ice cream shop, a convenience store and a deli – all of which have remained as vital components of the business to this day.

Currently, Keil’s Pharmacy is jointly owned by Stuart Keil, his wife and their son, Andrew Keil. Andrew Keil, who joined the business in the early 1990s, has dedicated his time at Keil’s to enhancing the home health care and surgical supply departments.

Andrew Keil acknowledges that major pharmaceutical companies affect small businesses like Keil’s. “The pharmacy business has changed significantly since my grandfather started in 1933,” said Keil. “Herman saw the the rise of major pharmaceutical manufacturing. The positive aspects of this were advances in modern medicine and the negative was the commercialization of medicine.”

Despite the ever-evolving market that pharmaceutical products are apart of, Keil’s has thrived while meeting its customers’ variety of needs and plans on doing nothing less throughout its future. Andrew Keil said, “For me and the next several decades, I see our business continuing to serve the needs of our neighborhood by offering our standard pharmacy services and expanding more personal services. We have already started expanding our home health care and surgical supply department, compounding services, seasonal immunizations, educational drop in events and DME equipment rental services.”

Keil’s Pharmacy is located at 732 Valley Road in Montclair and is open seven days a week. Keil’s is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Their typical holiday hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
