Find out who are the deserving athletes of MSU!
Each week, the Montclair State University Athletic Department chooses two very dedicated and talented athletes as MSU Athletes of the Week. Sydney Stein and Charles Cobbertt took the gold for the week of Jan. 18 through the 24. Both are students as well as swimmers and divers at MSU.
“Coming to Montclair helped me progress immensely as an athlete and has allowed me to achieve [and] surpass many of my goals,” Stein said. “My team and coaches have shown me a lot of support these past four years and I can’t thank them enough.”
A member of the women’s swimming and diving team, Stein comes to Montclair State University all the way from Reistertown, Md. where she used to swim for the YMCA. This is the second time she has been named Athlete of the Week this season as she also earned the title this past November. Most commonly, Stein can be seen participating in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events. This senior athlete has a record that never ceases to impress. Earlier this month, she was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
According to Montclair Athletics website, “Stein’s winning performance in the 1000 freestyle at Rowan currently stands as the top NJAC time in the event this season.”
Just like Stein, Cobbertt of the men’s swimming and diving team was also chosen as one of the MSU Athletes of the Week for the second time. His past achievement was from October of this fall semester. This is an amazing accomplishment for any swimmer, never mind a freshman.
Cobbertt’s stats are astounding; he is currently in the Top 20 of the New Jersey Athletic Conference for the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, as well as both the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Aside from records in the freestyle and backstroke, he also swims in medley events. These are a combination of four different styles of swimming: the butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke.
“I’ll say it’s a great honor being on a strong, motivational [and] supportive team,” Cobbertt said in regards to having been chosen as Athlete of the Week again this season. “Although I do have a disability, it didn’t stop me from swimming. A college athlete should [be] challenged and always push themselves mentally and physically.”
After their final home meets this weekend, the MSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be gearing up for the Metropolitan Championships in New Brunswick. This will run over a three-day period, from Feb. 19 to the 21. To see both phenomenal athletes in action, visit montclairathletics.com for details on upcoming meets.
