Montclair is well known for its commitment to the authentic, but Fujiya Ramen is perhaps one of the best testaments to that. The Japanese ramen restaurant, located at 413 Bloomfield Ave., is a cozy, vibrant den of brilliant food and experienced management. It is perfect for a quick lunch or a fancy dinner date later on in the evening. The restaurant advertises itself as Montclair’s first authentic Japanese ramen restaurant, and it is easy to see why. Aside from the bona fide Japanese flavors, the heart and soul that has been put into the establishment is as genuine and heartfelt as it gets.

Fujiya Ramen is the product of an enthusiastic father-son relationship that is embedded in years of Ramen culture. Minoru Yoshida and his son Zen are passionate about Japanese cuisine, this much is obvious from their restaurant. The restaurant is laden in traditional Japanese art, style and atmosphere. This comes from the fact that for over 40 years, Minoru has invested himself in being a ramen chef. He has worked in Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures since the 1960’s, before he finally accomplished his dream of opening a ramen restaurant in America. That dream has been more than realized in his establishment, where his enthusiasm for the business has inspired the employees, and furthered the enjoyment of his customers.

“Our authenticity [sets us apart],” said the manager of the restaurant. “Everything is exactly how you would get it in an original Japanese ramen house. That’s down to Minoru, who knows how to bring authenticity and not mimicry.”

The menu itself is both delicate and delicious. Your best bet is in their ramen selection, which includes Gyuniku Ramen, made with sliced beef, bamboo shoots, scallions and kikurage mushrooms. While ramen is the specialty, the menu delivers in many other areas as well. The Japanese Green Tea is astonishingly refreshing, and the chicken curry rice is a unique and flavorful dish.

Fujiya Ramen is open from 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. during the weeks, with a short break between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. as they prepare for dinner. To call and reserve, the number is 973-655-8855.
