Ylonda Gault Caviness presents “Child, Please”

Ylonda Gault Caviness shares her recent publication with Montclair Public Library.

The award-winning journalist, Ylonda Gault Caviness, who appeared on the Today Show, MSNBC, FOX 5, and more will heading to the great town of Montclair. She will be at the Montclair Public Library  on Tues. Oct. 25 as part of the library’s With the Author series. Caviness will discuss her book Child, Please: How Mama’s Old-School Lessons Helped Me Check Myself Before I Wrecked Myself.

You may have recognize Ylonda Gault Caviness‘ work in many great publications. She has written for the New York Times, “What Black Moms Know,” and WebMd, “8 Things No One Tells You About Marriage.” From there, the list goes on with Essence, Redbook, and MariaShriver.com.

Child, Please explores what happens when Caviness finds herself worlds away from her black, working-class roots – as a parenting editor living in a prosperous and liberal enclave in the city of New York.  She speaks about the prism of race and class to dissect the zeitgeist, family drama and “mother-sucking” absurdities that make her wonder whether she is going crazy or coming back. As it would have it, the lifestyle of being a mother and having a career begin to careen, in which she eventually falls back on her home training.

“Modern motherhood advice columns and practice revolve around always putting the child’s wants first. It’s a common conflict within the current generation of parents; they want to be liked, but also raise strong, successful kids. Ylonda uses humor to discuss the disparities between the two models of motherhood in America.” said Chelsea Dodd, Information Specialist at Montclair Public Library.

The series, presented in partnership with Watchung Booksellers, promotes local authors with the intent of fostering a love of reading and a love of literature.

All events are free and open to the public, but registration is highly recommended. The library is handicapped accessible and can provide assistive listening devices upon request.
