In the Round, comprised of Jeffrey Gaines, Deni Bonet and Milton, will be supporting singer-songwriter Richard Barone at Outpost in the Burbs on Friday, May 9.
Jeffrey Gaines, an alternative folk/rock artist since 1990, has released tracks such as “Hero in Me,” “A Dark Love Song,” “I Like You” and a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” His sound can be compared to Gabriel himself, along with a lighter version of Lenny Kravitz.
Deni Bonet is an indie/alternative multi-instrumentalist who sings and plays ukelele, piano, electric violin and viola, just to name a few. To hear what talents she has to bring, listen to “Alone” and “One in a Million” to get started. Not much is known about Milton, but his folk/indie sounds with bluegrass and blues influences come alight on tracks such as “Blue Ridge Mountains,” “Whole Lotta Pain,” “Pale Moonlight” and “St. Anne’s Parade.”
Richard Barone, originally from Tampa but now residing in Hoboken, N.J., has been making music since the 1980s and is considered to be one of the pioneers of “chamber pop,” which can be best described as pop with experimental elements and a light jazz influence. Barone was also a member of The Bongos, who thrived very well in the Hoboken music scene in the 80s. Like Bonet, he is a multi-instrumentalist, specializing in voice, guitar, mellotron and synthesizers, along with a few others.
The Bongos showcased heavy influences of The Beatles, The Zombies, The Monkees, Donovan Leitch and the late Lou Reed when they brought forth “Mambo Sun,” “Bulrushes,” “Tiger Nights” and many more tracks.
As a solo artist, Richard Barone performs with more of a Frank Sintara-esque influence in sound, but even more upbeat and a little more rock-and-roll/ new wave driven. Listen closely to “River to River,” “I Belong to Me” and his rendition of Lou Reed’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” to hear the difference between his solo sounds and sounds of The Bongos.
The venue is at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Montclair on 67 Church Street. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Parking is available in the lot at the rear of the church.
