Danceworks creates a story of Oedipus.
Presented by Montclair State’s department of theater and dance, Danceworks 2013 hits the stage in early April, exploring the theme of “Myth and Transformation” with a choreographic retelling of Oedipus.
Oedipus, in brief for those unfamiliar, is the story of a man who makes an attempt to avoid his fate and ends up stumbling right into it.
The Danceworks performance will feature dance pieces such as Approaching Silence by Rebecca Stenn and Powers of Ten by May O’Donnell, acclaimed dance pioneer. The performance will be cemented by Martha Graham’s Daughters of the Night women’s chorus.
The Danceworks show is to be performed in the Alexander Kasser Theater on Montclair State University’s main campus. It is showing on April 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m., April 6 and 7 at 2 p.m. and again on April 6 at 8 p.m.
The Alexander Kasser Theater is a fantastic space with state-of-the-art lighting and scenery, seating 520 audience members. Parking for the show is located directly next to the theatre in the Red Hawk Parking Deck at an hourly rate. A fully-automated facility, you will receive a ticket when entering that can be brought to any of the Pay Stations on levels 2, 4 or 5 of the deck, and paid for with cash or credit card.
Tickets are available for $15 each. Tickets can be purchased either at the Alexander Kasser Theater Box Office, or online at the Peak Performance website. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. During the days of the performance, it is open for extended hours, from 10 a.m. until at least an hour into the show.
Alternatively, one free ticket is available for all Montclair State undergraduate students who wish to reserve one at the Box office. A valid student I.D. must be presented when reserving the ticket.
Tickets go fast, and are for specific seats rather than general admission, so make sure to go early if getting good seats, sitting together with a group or going on a certain night is a priority.
After the show, MSU’s campus offers a variety of food venues as well – such as Café Diem, located around the corner from the theater connected to the Sprague Library. As a café, their menu consists of many freshly-brewed Starbucks coffees, breakfast items, gourmet sandwiches and salads.
Another option, if you’re after a full meal, would be the Red Hawk Diner. There is metered parking available in the lot by the Diner, at a rate of $0.75 per half hour, for a maximum of three hours. These meters only accept cash.
Also, if you’re looking for somewhere close-by to eat off campus, Six Brothers Diner is on Route 46, easily accessible from campus if you take Normal Avenue to Clove Road, and then take Clove Road all the way to its end.
Danceworks 2013 will prove to be a memorable experience, from the gorgeous theater, to the actual show and the possibility of fun and food with friends afterwards.
