The epic rise and fall of rock and roll as a mainstream music genre left many die hard fans of rock’s greatest groups in dismay. For these fans, rock supergroup Kings of Chaos is a godsend. The group is made up of various rock legends, from bands such as Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Aerosmith and more. The core of the group, Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke and Duff McKagan, are members of Guns n Roses and Velvet Revolver, with Duff being a founding member of Guns n Roses.

Matt Sorum came up with the initial idea and acted upon it. According to Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, who toured with the band in South Africa, Sorum asked several rockers “that he’d known for years” if they wanted to “get aboard this crazy train. Join in, sing a few songs and have a bit of fun — with no pressure.”

Kings of Chaos started its journey in 2012 under the name Rock n Roll All-Stars, when they took part in a successful tour of South America. Shortly after, they reincarnated themselves as Kings of Chaos, and subsequently played various tours across the globe, including at Australia’s Stone Music Fest.

The nature of Kings of Chaos dictates that its lineup is never the same for long. This presents fans at different shows with a unique blend of rock legends each time they see the group perform. Ron Roa, a senior student at Rutgers University, said this is a big reason that he started following the group. “When I first learned of the concept of Kings of Chaos, that was when I realistically became a fan,” said Roa. “I mean, how could you not love the fact that these rockstars are still rocking out together and putting on shows? Not only does it give fans like me something to love, it’s good to see them still going hard and doing their thing.”

The band has boasted a variety of high-profile rockstars. The group announced a South African tour in 2014 that included playing with Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. Later that year, the group played at Classic Rock Magazine’s Roll of Honor Awards, where they performed with Brian May and Joe Perry.

The band starts its 2016/2017 tour in Montclair, which will be the town’s first taste of some historic rock ballads and energetic performances. According to the band’s website, kingsofchaosband.com, the band for their next tour will consist of Billy Gibbons,Chester Bennington, Corey Taylor, Matt Sorum, Robert Deleo and Steve Stevens.

The show, which will take place on Dec. 17, is sure to gather a large crowd made up of the eclectic fan bases the group appeals to. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are available at the theater or by going to their website, wellmontheater.com. The theater is located at 5 Seymour Street in Montclair, N.J.
