In 2012, 75 cyclists participated in the Montclair Bikery Turkey Ride and collectively donated 175 turkeys to the Human Needs Food Pantry. Fast forward three years and the event is hoping to have at least 350 cyclists and collect 500 turkeys for our neighbors in need.

The ride, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday Nov. 20, will start at the Montclair Bikery at 145 Valley Road and take cyclists on a 15-mile flat ride to the Brookdale ShopRite in Bloomfield to pick up turkeys and then to the Human Needs Food Pantry to deliver them.

According to a source from the Human Needs Food Pantry, the donations made from the Turkey Ride contributed to a total of 850 turkeys that they were able to donate last year to people in need throughout Essex County last year.

“We thank each and every one of the charitable people who make this happen; the turkey ride truly exemplifies the spirit of ‘giving thanks’ for all we have by sharing with others who are less fortunate,” said Dave Adornato, Owner of Montclair Bikery.

This year, the Turkey Ride is also including a new option for those who don’t want to ride outside, including spin classes at 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Athletic Genius that are free with a $20 donation. Sign-ups for these classes can be found on the Athletic Genius website at athleticgenius.com.

Those who don’t want to ride or spin on Nov. 20 can still help out the Human Needs Food Pantry by making a contribution for Turkeys at the Montclair Bikery. All donations made between now and the ride will be matched by Partners For Health, one of the Turkey Ride’s main sponsors.

“Funds raised during the Annual Turkey Ride help to address the persistent issue of hunger in our community, while incentivizing participants to be physically active,” said Pam Scott, Executive Director of the Partners For Health Foundation. “We are proud that our matching grants program has contributed to the success of this wonderful effort.”

Interested participants should register online at bikereg.com or in-person at the Montclair Bikery prior to the ride. Each cyclist must be at least 18 years old and bring $20 for each turkey planning to donate.
