Outpost in the Burbs is a non-profit outreach organization dedicated to building community through music, community service and cultural programming. Concerts, activities and other events are offered throughout the year to make Montclair a more lovable place to live.

Thanks to Outpost, locals can find live music every Friday through the fall, winter and spring. Over 50,000 people have attended Outpost showcases featuring such acts as Judy Collins, Roger McGuinn and Dar Williams. Dedicated to the mission of giving back, Outpost invites locals to volunteer within the organization as well as the community at large.

For over 30 years, Outpost has been a part of the Montclair community. The organization has partnered with a selection of nonprofits including Habitat for Humanity, Community Foodbank of New Jersey, Soup Kitchen Workdays and Human Needs Pantry. Volunteers are welcome for any and all levels of participation.

Although Outpost doesn’t run its regular Friday concerts throughout the summer, there are still lots of things going on this season. “Outpost in the Burbs is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization committed to offering both a top-notch music series and community service opportunities and partnerships,” said Gail Prusslin, Outpost in the Burb’s Vice President and seat on the Board of Trustees. “We present internationally and nationally touring artists as well as local and emerging musicians in intimate settings with exquisite acoustics. This summer, we are presenting a free concert at Montclair Center Stage on Aug. 6. The lineup will be announced soon. We are also working with MESH (Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless) this summer to prepare and serve meals at the First Congregational Church.”

No matter how many famous artists make their way through one of Outpost’s events, the mission of giving back never ends.

This September, Outpost will host one of its largest concerts of the year. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Dan Bern will return to Outpost’s stage on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 67 Church St. Iowa native, Bern is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter and novelist known for an impressive number of original compositions. His style has been compared to such artists as Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Elvis Costello. For tickets and more information about Outpost in the Burbs, check out their official website.
