Savannah Bigelow learns the beauty of Bobbi Brown.
Montclair High School senior Savannah Bigelow just finished up her internship at the Bobbi Brown Studio in Montclai. It is located at 10 Lackawanna Plaza. Bigelow interned there for Brown and learned about the philosophy of Brown’s company, about all of the products, the process of applying make up and the behind the scenes work that is required for any company to run smoothly.
“I got the job because my dad is good friends with Bobbi’s husband, Steven Plofker,” explained Bigelow. “He asked Mr. Plofker if it would be possible for me to intern there. Mr. Plofker gave me Bobbi’s number and she agreed to take me on as an intern.”
Savannah Bigelow worked at the studio four times a week: Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
“Some days I did have to stay longer because there was more stock that had to be put away,” added Bigelow. “One day they had a workshop at the studio that focused on the products that were coming out for the summer and the holiday season. Since there was so much to do I was there until around six that day.”
While at the studio, Savannah Bigelow was required to carry out various tasks to help out Brown, the make-up artists and the store manager.
“I really just did anything that the store manager and the other make-up artists asked of me,” explained Bigelow. “Typically, the main task was restocking products. I also had to organize the new products along with the old products because the studio is undergoing a renovation on July first.”
Savannah Bigelow’s other tasks included filling out “face charts” while the make-up artists were doing someone’s make up. Face charts are what make-up artists use to keep track of all the products that were used on a client during their make-up session.
While some days were long and there were a lot of tasks to be accomplished, Bigelow thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent interning.
“I really did enjoy the experience. The women who worked there were all so welcoming and taught me so much,” Bigelow said. “I think my favorite part was learning about the philosophy of Bobbi’s company.”
The philosophy of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics really impressed Savannah Bigelow.
“It’s more than just a make-up company; it’s a lifestyle brand that stresses a healthy life revolv[ing] around not only a healthy body, but a healthy mind,” Bigelow explained. “Bobbi is such a proponent of setting goals and working towards them and treating others the way you would want to be treated.”
But the greatest thing about the Bobbi Brown philosophy, in Bigelow’s opinion, is the fact that Brown stresses women and girls to embrace their flaws and their natural beauty.
“She’s all about enhancing natural beauty and not caking on the make up,” added Bigelow. “She believes that if you have a healthy mind and body you will look better and actually need less make-up. I find this philosophy to be very unique to her company and even though it is such a simple concept, it makes so much sense.”
While she enjoyed the internship and learned a lot, Savannah Bigelow doesn’t see herself working in cosmetics. Bigelow’s true passion rests in fashion, and she one day hopes to do something along of the lines of fashion journalism. Come fall, she will be attending University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin where she will major in English and Journalism.
