‘The Producers’ brings humor to Montclair State University.
Peak Performances is bringing yet another quality performance to Montclair State University with The Producers, by the John J. Cali School of Music/Department of Theatre and Dance. The Producers is a musical adaption of the Mel Brooks 1968 film centered on two theatrical producers looking to get rich by exaggerating interests in a Broadway flop through steps including: finding the worst play ever, the worst director, the worst actors and making millions to then close on Broadway, take the money and run.
Throughout the show, an unexpected turn takes place when the show that is set up for failure becomes widely successful. This makes the musical a pure comedy in addition to funny accents, caricatures and show business jokes. The musical is said to be a much more upbeat version of the story as opposed to the original dark, comedy.
“I’ve been told that [this show] may be one of the absolute funniest musicals of all time! Having personal experience with a musical theater background and a minor in acting, I can honestly say that I am overwhelmingly excited to see it come to life here in Montclair,” said MSU student Jessie Anton. “The talent in the theatre department truly never ceases to impress and amaze its’ audiences.”
The original Broadway production of this musical was both nominated for and won over 30 awards, including the Tony Awards for “Best Musical,” Best Original Score” and “Best Choreography,” along with Drama Desk Awards for “Outstanding Book of a Musical,” “Outstanding Lyrics” and “Outstanding Orchestrations.” This goes to show that, once again, Peak Performances never fails to bring some of the best performances to the Montclair community.
The show will debut on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alexander Kasser Theater at Montclair State University. Succeeding performances will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m.
