The 1981 acoustic punk band, Violent Femmes, that’s been playing on the streets of Milwaukee, will make their to Montclair’s prized venue,The Wellmont Theater on Sat. Oct. 1. The event is set to begin at 8 P.M., but doors will be open at 7 P.M.
Violent Femmes‘ main influences are Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps, and The Velvet Underground. In efforts of maintaining their goal of rocking harder than any other acoustic act, I think they’ve succeeded, as they have been recognized as one of the most inventive and original bands of the era.
Although Violent Femmes are familiar with rejection, it never stopped them from achieving their goal. As they were denied an audition by a local nightclub, they decided to set up outside a Pretenders gig. Chrissie Hynde asked them to open that night’s show. Long and behold, the doors opened up for the Violent Femmes as this publicity boost, led them to be invited to play in NYC supporting Richard Hell. Due to the rave review in the New York Times, it led to a record deal, which in turn spawned worldwide touring.

As they released their first album, it was actually the first and only album in Billboard history to enter the charts as a platinum album, eight years after its release. The Violent Femmes became worldly known in festivals, clubs and theatres in over 30 countries within three decades.

MTV’s “Unplugged” show was inspired by the Violent Femmes, even though they never actually appeared on it. Their raw sound and honest lyrical perspective has been cited as an influence by artists as diverse as Pink, Keith Urban, The Smiths, Nirvana, Lou Reed, John Cusack, Mark Morris, and Wim Wenders.
