On Dec. 17, friends and family gathered at the George Inness Theater to watch the students of Montclair High School perform their winter vocal concert.

Montclair High School’s School of Visual and Performing Arts Music Department presented Songs of the Season, directed by music director Boyce Ennis. Students of all singing capabilities performed hit songs such as “He’s Able,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and many more.

The winter vocal concert was split up into three parts including two intermissions for time for students to refuel and change if needed. The first part of the concert included the Mixed Chorus. This is the chorus arranged of all students who wish to join and take vocal and music classes at the high school.

The second part of the winter vocal concert was the Honor Choir, which is the first audition group where students who wish to join must audition in order to make the cut.

Lastly, the show ended with the Madrigal Choir, which is the highest honor choir, also considered advanced placement (AP), which requires a very stringent audition to make the cut. In order to make it into Madrigal Choir, the student has to spend at least one year in the Honor Choir first in order to get into the Madrigal Choir.

Students interested in joining the vocal choir can join in many ways. They can either contact their guidance counselor at the school and he/she can help the student enroll in the upcoming year, or the student can stop by the music room at Montclair High School express their interest in joining the organization.

Boyce Ennis is the music director at Montclair High School who runs the vocal department and conducts the vocal chorus concerts. When asked about his favorite part of the vocal chorus concerts, Ennis said, “seeing the parents come out and seeing the kids who have solos actually come out of their shells and you see everyone else enjoying what’s happening on stage.”

The School of Visual and Performing Arts at Montclair High School offers a major course of study and training in a large variety of Fine and Performing Arts including Visual Arts, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Dance and Theater Arts. All courses offered by the School of Visual and Performing Arts are available as electives to all students. It is required that each student earns five Visual and Performing Art credits for graduation.
