Montclair Township unveils Zipcar service.
Last week, Montclair Township introduced the Zipcar Service to the community at a ribbon cutting ceremony on the rooftop the The Crescent Deck.
Unveiled by Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson and Zipcar Regional Vice President Nicole Mozeliak, the pair hopes that this service will convenience the commuters of Montclair, just how it benefits people in areas where services already exists.
“Each Zipcar takes about 15 cars off the road so it’s an environmental plus. Secondly, less cars means easing congestion on our roads. Finally, if owning a vehicle isn’t a must, living in Montclair just became more affordable,” said Mayor Jackson. “I am excited about having Zipcar in town…it’s another arrow in our sustainable lifestyle quiver. I hope that it grows beyond our wildest expectations!”
Zipcar is a company whose goal is to help commuters and people get around their city or town easier. The service is available for people to rent cars hourly or daily with both gas and insurance included. All types of cars, such as sedans, hybrids, vans and more, are available to those who are interested in renting from Zipcar. The objective of the company is to have cars available to rent to people, which ultimately saves hundreds of dollars compared to those who own cars.
If you’re an interested commuter in the Montclair area, you first have to log onto their website and apply for what is called a “Zipcard,” which grants you access to thousands of cars, trucks and vans across the area. Once you are familiar with the website and a have received your Zipcard, you can begin reserving your car of choice. This can be done online or on your phone via their mobile app.
Now that you have reserved your car, you will be given complete information on how to pick it up. All you have to do is walk to the car, hold your Zipcard to the windshield and the doors will unlock and your unbelievable experience begins. After your reservations runs out, all you have to do is return the car back to the same spot where you got it. Easy as that!
You’re probably wondering, how can this service be more beneficial compared to car ownership? Well, the rates speak for themselves. In the Montclair area, there are two types of plans: occasional driving plan and monthly driving plan. The most popular, occasional driving plan, which is ideal for first-time users, has a rate of $70/year with a non-refundable $25 one-time application fee. The monthly driving plan has a $7/month rate with a non-refundable $25 one-time application fee. Both plans include gas, insurance and up to a certain amount of free miles per day depending on your plan and car.
Zipcar service is not just available to citizens of communities who are interested in saving money. The service is offered to businesses including low weekday driving rates for business members only, gas, insurance and daily mileage included, and will be conveniently parked around the office. Zipcar is also offered at universities and is recommended to students because it reduces demand for parking and has low hourly and daily rates that students will be able to afford.
“Zipcar is really convenient, especially for students just like myself who don’t have their cars with them at school,” said Montclair State student, Brianna Diskin. “Sometimes I need to run to the store to get something, but I can’t because I don’t have my car. Now having the Zipcar service allows me to do so.”
