‘Deadpool’ Review

‘Deadpool,’ the most explicit Marvel movie to date, is an arsenal of non-stop action, violence and a whole lot of laughter, thanks to Ryan Reynolds.

Hollywood’s most cynical superhero makes his big-screen debut in this past weekend’s ‘Deadpool.’

What happens when you take a Marvel superhero movie and flip it on its head? Well, if you’re lucky enough, you’ll hit its head hard enough to give you Deadpool, this weekend’s not-so-surprise blockbuster hit.

Deadpool follows the transformation of mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) from human to mutant. When Wilson is informed of his terminally-ill cancer, he pushes himself to do anything and everything possible to save himself for the likes of his escort/fiancé Vanessa. Hence, when the opportunity arises to cure himself of his troubles, Wilson takes part in a new brand of underground “treatment” that promises the skies and more. The downfall? His treatment turns him into an unappealing monster, of sorts. Therefore, Wilso invents Deadpool. He uses this disguise to find Ajax, the man responsible for his hideous appearance, in a last-chance attempt to win over his gal for all of his outer beauty.

Director Tim Miller, along with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, create a universe within a universe, building a complex character among a backdrop of well-established X-Men. Within its 108 minute running time, leading man Reynolds completely embodies the role of Deadpool, leaving his permanent stamp on the role and his career. Furthermore, thanks to such great casting, this film acts as a progressive thrill-ride of comedy, action and a strong romance element, just in time for your annual Valentine’s Day movie night with your partner. It might not be completely solid around the edges; rather, the character of Deadpool and his quick sense of dry, sarcastic humor  gives you enough momentum to keep going for more than just your money’s worth.

Deadpool didn’t feel like a Marvel movie, which was really refreshing,” said Jenna Stuiso, Nutley-based Marvel film-fanatic. “The film is just as funny as it seems, and Ryan Reynolds is the epitome of the character at hand, similar to Robert Downey, Jr. and the Iron Man franchise.”

Whether you’re an X-Men fan or not, Deadpool brings a sense of charisma and vulgarity to the big screen that has been missing from superhero movies for years now. This standalone spin-off proves that the cynical, all-too-abrasive Reynolds has not only still got some magic left in him, but that there’s still hope for the droning schedule of masks and capes still to come to the big screen.
