Peak Performances is bringing yet another quality and professional performance to the Alexander Kasser Theater with the American premiere of Krapp’s Last Tape. This show is a precisely choreographed one act play directed and designed by Samuel Beckett, performed by Robert Wilson.

The character on stage, Krapp, carries on conversations with himself throughout the show through recordings of his own voice from years prior. When he does not recognize the voice of his youth, the audience is fascinated and taken on a journey with the actor which can be both bitter and hilarious.

The show is made up of parts featuring moments of both light and dark. It is rumored that Beckett uses aspects of Manichaeism as a basis of the structure, as it was believed that the world was ruled by evil powers. In Krapp’s Last Tape, Becket expresses this by violating three important prohibitions of the religion: the seal of the hands, forbidding engagement in a profession; the seal of the breast against sexual desire; and the seal of the mouth, which forbids the drinking of wine.

“I learned about this show a really long time ago in one of my acting classes,” said Montclair State University student Laura Pennell. “When I heard it was coming to Montclair, I was thoroughly excited to get the opportunity to see it. My acting coach taught me a lot about the different aspects of this show and went on about how captivating and interesting it is, so I feel really lucky that I can go see it when it premiere’s at our very own theater on campus.”

The first showing of this exclusive American premiere of Krapp’s Last Tape will be on Thursday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alexander Kasser Theater located at Montclair State University at 1 Normal Avenue. Succeeding performances will be held on Friday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 19 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 20 at 3:00 p.m.
