The Art Garage, founded in 2004 by Suzanne O’Connor, is home to the StudioKids Art program, founded in 2008, which gives children the opportunity to become involved in classes aimed to teach art education. The Art Garage, which first started in a garage and has now transformed into a factory building with a gallery and studio, is located at Manufacturer’s Village in East Orange.

The classes, whose lessons are geared towards teaching math, science, art history, drawing and critical thinking, and run four, six or eight weeks long for 45 minutes to one hour (this depends on the type of class your child is taking, the age and the grade).

StudioKids Art’s purpose is to offer classes that are scheduled through the school that provide after school enrichment programs. These classes, which the school determines, are offered through fundraisers mainly through the PTA of that school. Each StudioKids Art class is on average 75 dollars per session. Every class includes a professional instructor and all art supplies.

Classes are split into two age groups – grades kindergarten to second (ages 5-7) and grades third to eighth (ages 8-14).  Classes available to the kindergarten to second grade age group includes “Architecture for Juniors,” “Clay and Pottery Studio,” “Comic Book Club Jr.,” “Digital Photography,” “Puppetry” and more.

Classes available to the third to eighth grade age group include “Animation,” “Comic Book Club,” “Fashion Passion!,” “Power Drawing,” “Puppetry,” “Jewelry Design and Accessories” and more.

Owner and founder Suzanne O’Connor’s main inspiration in starting up The Art Garage and StudioKids Art was to create an atmosphere for students and children who have a passion for learning more about art.

“Art in general has gone through a tremendous change,” said O’Connor. “It’s frustrating to me that some children are not getting the exposure to art that they should be. The Art Garage and StudioKids Art offers classes for those who are not involved in sports and for those whose needs are not being addressed.”

The Art Garage is open Friday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. If you are interested in learning more information or want to sign your child up, visit studiokidsart.com, call 973-677-7701 or visit their location at 356 Glenwood Ave. in East Orange.
