Purple Purse Challenge: Do You Accept?

Get involved with helping those who undergo domestic violence by participating in the Purple Purse Challenge!

Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates (S.O.F.I.A.) will be competing for the $650,000 grand prize in The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge. The Challenge, an annual competition hosted on CrowdRise, is a public fundraising and awareness campaign that coincides with October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Purple Purse Challenge provides an opportunity for organizations that support domestic violence survivors to increase their donor base and push for vital funds. All of the proceeds go toward nonprofits that provide life-changing financial empowerment services to help domestic violence survivors build safer lives for themselves and their families.

The Challenge has leveled the playing field by dividing partner organizations into two divisions based on organizational budget size – giving everyone a great shot at the $325,000 in grants awarded by The Allstate Foundation. In order to count toward an organization’s total, donations must be received by Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.

In its 12th year, Allstate Foundation Purple Purse has serviced more than 800,000 victims as they directed them to the road to safety and security. They have invested more than $50 million to empower women to know how and when to break free from abuse through a life-changing process such as financial education, job training and readiness, and small business programs for survivors.

For those not familiar with S.O.F.I.A., it is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Montclair that provides advocacy, supportive services and referrals for temporary housing to “at risk” women and children of domestic violence. The objective is to assist each victim and survivor become self-sufficient, positive and successful.

“We also hope to reach supporters in the community and raise awareness of what domestic abuse can look like. One in three women and one in four men experience some form of domestic abuse. It’s not always as clear-cut as a broken bone or a black eye,” said Kristin Wald, Board Member of S.O.F.I.A.

This will actually be S.O.F.I.A.‘s third time competing in the Challenge. Last year, S.O.F.I.A. raised over $800,000 through CrowdRise and are hoping to top that number this year! The Challenge, itself raised nearly $3.1 million for 161 domestic violence organizations throughout the United States.
