Starting on Tuesday, Dec. 20, Gregory Koufacos, MA LCADC NCRC of Montclair, N.J., will be hosting monthly men’s group sessions that revolve around connection and recovery. Koufacos, a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC) and a therapist, has been working in the New York City Metropolitan area for over 10 years in different settings.

“I worked for several years in inpatient and outpatient settings at different practices before I was able to create my own practice using the techniques I learned,” said Koufacos.

Gregory Koufacos has worked out of offices in New York City and Montclair since 2012 and is a specialist in addiction recovery and experiential therapy for men. This is a type of therapy where participants act out experiences and feelings with their peers, which is, according to Koufacos, the most valuable and useful therapy for men, who “don’t value talking as much.”

Experiential therapy was developed in the 1970s as an effective component of different treatment options. According to CRC Health, an online database of healthcare issues and resolutions, “the experiences and activities that form the core of the [experiential therapy] process provide opportunities for the therapist to observe patients in situations where the patients are not focused on the therapy itself.”

The Monthly Men’s group, which will be located near Union Square in New York City, will consist of a maximum of eight individuals who are all in different stages of addiction recovery. It will be an “honest, open, supportive environment for men to talk about challenges they are facing or have faced.”

According to Koufacos, the goal of the sessions will be to “talk about our goals, obstacles, successes and failures and support and challenge you through your recovery process. We are aiming to chip away at the armor that you have adapted to move through life. The armor and walls must come down if you are to fully enjoy yourself and your life.”
