Matisse exhibitions coming soon to Montclair Art Museum.
On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Montclair Art Museum will preview the upcoming Matisse Exhibitions at the Merchant Meeting. The museum expects around 15,000 visitors for this highly anticipated, exclusive to Montclair event. According the the Montclair Center BID, exhibition attendance will increase Montclair Art Museum’s economic impact on our community. The Montclair Center Business Improvement District is a non-profit organization that promotes and expands business in downtown Montclair.
The Montclair Art Museum’s event will be the first in examining Matisse’s impact on modern American art. The French painter Matisse inspired revolutionary use of color and shadow that has been said to have significant impact on modern art. Matisse himself claimed that his purpose was “to discover the essential character of things, as well as to create artwork of balance, purity and serenity.”
“The Montclair Art Museum will soon be opening the first exhibition to examine the profound impact of Henri Matisse upon American artists from 1907 to present,” said Gail Stavinsky, Chief Curator of the Museum. “With 19 works by Matisse and over 40 works by 34 American artists, this show features paintings, sculptures, works on paper and archival objects from around the country in public and private collections. It is therefore a rare opportunity.”
The show will be accompanied by a fully illustrated and detailed catalogue. Some of the American artists will include Max Weber, Alfred Maurer, Maurice Prendergast, Stuart Davis, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Romare Bearden, John Baldessari, Sophie Matisse, Faith Ringgold and Helen Frankenthaler. The event will feature 65 paintings, prints and other artwork in total that explore Matisse’s artwork in relation to modern American artwork.
The Montclair Art Museum exhibition will explore the 20th century and the 21st century time period. It will also illuminate Matisse’s unique technique and style while also exploring subject matter. In addition, the Montclair Art Museum will showcase a corresponding parallel exhibition, “Inspired by Matisse: Selected Works from the Collection,” with works by Alfred Maurer, Stuart Davis, Romare Bearden, Nick Cave, Alex Katz and others.
“Matisse and American Art” will show from Feb. 5 to June 18. “Inspired by Matisse” will start Feb. 5 and continue through the 2018 summer. Montclair Art Museum chief curator Stavitsky organized the event along with Dr. John Cauman and Lisa Mintz Messenger. Stavitsky will be presenting on the Matisse exhibitions at the Montclair Art Museum from Feb. 5 to June 18.
