Slightly Stoopid always satisfies the crowd.
Slightly Stoopid is a band known for its long crowd pleasing sets filled with chilled reggae. They took the crowd’s energy and gave it right back to them in a confident display of good vibes and even better music.
Walking up to the theater was an experience in and of itself. Getting to know the fans eagerly waiting outside immediately became my priority. For some people this was their first Slightly Stoopid show, and they were in for a treat.
Quincy Mumford and the Reason Why opened up for Slightly Stoopid. They are New Jersey natives who bring a great blend of classic rock and nuanced pop and soul to the table. Quincy and his band’s music was an interesting appetizer for the party that would soon ensue. As the openers played their last song and thanked the audience, the energy started to bounce off the walls. Everyone was really excited as things were starting to happen. Finally the last piece of equipment was set up and Slightly Stoopid took the stage. The energy was ricocheting from wall to wall and the crowd roared. The band gave a short hello and began to play.
After the intro they opened up with a song off their new album titled “Don’t Stop” to get the ball rolling. It’s a classic dub-reggae sounding track with a catchy horn melody to boot. Then they transitioned through a few songs until they came across the crowd pleaser “2 a.m.,” a tune filled with swagger wrapped in the chilled out groove supplied by the band’s rhythm section. The band was rocking, people were moving and everybody was doing all right.
Shortly after that, they broke out into their new single “Top of the World,” a funky, rock jam that changed the mood of the show to a calmer more placid one. This of course would not last long.
After they shouted out their new album, they began a jam that eventually became their hit title track from their album Closer to the Sun. This amped the crowd up as the band winded down into what would soon become their final song before their encore.
As they ended the show you could really feel the love in the room. Smiling faces walked by as they proceeded to the exit. The chatter of happy concertgoers filling the room as the crowd poured out onto the street. Contented with the great performance, it was time to go home.
Slightly Stoopid performed an excellent show that had everyone in the room feeling the good vibrations. From the minute they took the stage to when they left, Slightly Stoopid gave an engaging and classic show. Once again the Wellmont proves that its choice in acts in unparalleled in the area. Stay tuned for Cheap trick, Bob Weir and Ratdog as well as Emblem3, all scheduled to play at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, N.J.
