Psychedelic Furs bring the audience to their feet.
When a band is able to stay together for as long as a group like the Psychedelic Furs have, there is a considerable amount of admiration in the fact that they are still able entice the audience as much as they did in their prime years. This was the general consensus of fans after the Psychedelic Furs concert last Friday at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair. The band’s set list summoned forth at once a mixture of nostalgia and adrenaline, and it was difficult to find a song throughout the show that wasn’t instantly sung along to by a crowd of new wave enthusiasts.
The incredibly talented Liza Colby opened up for the Psychedelic Furs with her band, the Liza Colby Sound, and their songs were few but wholeheartedly intense. It was interesting to see how energetic the crowd became in anticipation for the main act to come on, and it is the sign of a successful opening act if this transition happens so quickly. Colby’s physical actions on stage were a spectacle, to say the least, and as she moved her body to the groove of her own fierce but melodic vocals; the atmosphere surged forward to new levels of excitement.
And these levels that stayed fairly consistent throughout the main show. Lead singer of the Pyschedelic Furs, Richard Butler, frequently interacted with fans as he sung and moved his way across the stage during and in between songs, and exhibited an incredible handle of appealing to the audience- no doubt acquired from his elongated stage experience. Moreover, every band member appeared so passionate and invested in every second of their performance. It was more than evident that their fervor, even after all of these years of playing, has yet to fade.
The selection of songs from the group’s discography was surely a correct compilation of big hits and lesser knowns. Overall, whether you were a fan of the band beforehand or entered the venue never before listening to a Psychedelic Furs song, you were going to end up with a musically satisfying experience.
This Tuesday the Wellmont will host Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience, and tickets are going fast! Be sure to check them out now and get your ticket before it’s too late.
