Montclair Art Museum celebrates 100 years of education.
The Montclair Art Museum was founded in 1914. According to their website, “the museum, along with its Yard School of Art, engages a diverse community through its distinctive collection of American and Native American art, exhibitions and educational programs that link art to contemporary life in a global context.”
The Montclair Art Museum is one of the only museums in the country with exhibits featuring American and Native American art, totaling over 12,000 pieces. The American collection encompasses paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and more dating from the 18th century to the present. Additionally, the museum features the work of George Inness. It is the only gallery in the world dedicated solely to the work of painter Inness. He lived in Montclair from 1885 to 1894 and painted in the area.
After opening its doors in 1914, the Montclair Art Museum paid its thanks to the donations of artwork and funding of its two founders, Montclair residents William Evans and heiress Florence Osgood Rand Lang. Today, the Montclair Art Museum is looking to its residents to help keep the exhibits in tip-top shape.
One way the Montclair Art Museum is raising money is hosting a Centennial Ball on Saturday, April 26. Cocktails will start at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served under the big tent at 8 p.m. The event is black tie optional, but the chairs of the event invite guests to dress in fashions from their favorite decades.
The event co-chairs are Lisa Amato and Lyn Reiter, the honorary art co-chairs being Nick Cave, Willie Cole and Kiki Smith. All centennial celebration proceeds go towards the Montclair Art Museum’s 100-year tradition of “excellence in presenting exhibitions and programs that enrich the lives of our visitors.”
Tickets are available online today at montclairartmuseum.org.
