Forever Ray and Jazz Kids in the House

Forever Ray, a Ray Charles tribute band, will be performing with Montclair's own Jazz House Kids at Outpost in the Burbs on Friday June 6.

Forever Ray and the Jazz House Kids take over Outpost.

The Outpost show on June 6 will be different from many of the past shows: instead of its usual rock and folk lineups, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Montclair will be all jazzed up with Forever Ray and the Jazz House Kids.

Forever Ray has been performing the songs of Ray Charles to sold-out audiences all over New York City and its boroughs by adding their own twists of blues, rock and R&B to the main jazz base of music. Some Ray Charles numbers they have performed energetic renditions of are “What’d I Say,” “Night Time is the Right Time,” “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “Busted.” Although Forever Ray is not the only Ray Charles tribute band, they are arguably the best and most well-known.

Montclair’s own Jazz House Kids are not merely performers, as they are most well-known for giving back to the community. Every August in Montclair, they host the Summer Jazz Workshop and they also provide year-round cultural, artistic and musical programs to children and adults of all ages and walks of life. Some famous jazz performers help alongside the Jazz House Kids in these programs. For more information, please visit www.jazzhousekids.org.

Montclair’s KinderSmile foundation provides free dental care and oral health education to children who live in the rougher, less fortunate areas of Essex County. At this show, they will be collecting donations of new or gently used babies’ and children’s clothing, shoes, school supplies, backpacks, toys, baby formula and other babies’ items. These donations are part of  KinderSmile’s mission trip to provide dental care to orphans in Peru in June.

Tickets are $28 in advance and $32 at the door. They can be purchased at Keil’s Pharmacy at 732 Valley Road, Studio042 at 423 Bloomfield Avenue and at Isabel Rose and Terra Tea located inside the Montclair Public Library at 50 South Fullerton Avenue.

Parking is available at the back of the church, located on 67 Church Street.

For those who are looking to grab a bite to eat before the show, there is a variety of eateries all over Bloomfield Avenue, such as HLS (Health, Love and Soul), Escape, and Le Petit Parisien. There are also some eateries near the Lackawanna Plaza, such as Pig and Prince, and an American-fare restaurant/bar called Just Jake’s on Park Street and Bloomfield Avenue.
