Yogi Berra Museum Robbery

Montclair is home to many great things, such as Yogi Berra and the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center. Located on the campus of Montclair State University, the museum was recently broken into, and the community has raised their concern.

The Yogi Berra Museum is home to a vast collection of relics from Berra’s time in baseball, including a large collection of Yankee memorabilia. Some items inside the museum include a display of Berra’s World Championship rings, Lifetime Achievement Awards and love letters between Berra and his soon-to-be wife at the time.

The break-in allegedly occurred late Tuesday evening, Oct. 7, and the investigation is currently in full swing. Since the museum is on the campus of Montclair State, the university’s very own police are hosting the investigation since it is within their jurisdiction, according to University officials. The University Police are also working alongside state and federal police.

Since the investigation is active, little information has been released regarding the specific items that were stolen or how the thieves entered the museum. However, countless reports have stated that the break-in was a “professional job,” and a report by the New York Daily News stated that “the break-in — which sources described as ‘a team of professionals’ — entered the museum on the Montclair State University campus in Little Falls, N.J. on Tuesday night through the adjoining Yogi Berra Stadium, home of the New Jersey Jackals baseball team.”

The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center is located on the campus of Montclair State next to the Jackals Stadium, near the new Heights residence halls on the far end of campus. The museum has not yet released if they plan to re-open, and their website states that the museum is currently closed.

Since the investigation is taking place on the Montclair State campus, the university is expected to release a statement soon. Anyone who has any information about the investigation is urged to contact Montclair State University Police at 973-655-5222.

UPDATE (10/9/14 at 4:21 p.m.): According to a report by the New York Post, the thieves took “several World Series rings, two of his MVP plaques and other priceless items…The burglars also made off with the glove Berra used to catch Don Larsen’s perfect World Series

game in 1956.” The World Series rings and the glove are pictured in this article. The rings are estimated to be worth at least $150,000 a piece with some netting $250,000. It is unclear how many rings were stolen.
