FEMA updates maps in Montclair.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently announced the start of the statutory 90-day appeal period for communities where the floodplain delineations and modeling have been updated. The statutory 90-day appeal period for Montclair began on April 2, 2015. The comment period is related to the Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) released on May 30, 2014.
According to a recent announcement on the Montclair town’s website, “Several areas within Montclair may be affected by the new maps, including properties along or in the vicinity of Toneys Brook; Nishuane Brook; Third River (Pearl Brook) and its branches. Changes in the flood hazard determinations may include the addition or modification of base flood elevations, base flood depths, special flood hazard area boundaries or zone designations, or the regulatory floodway. During the comment period, relevant technical information and other comments are solicited on the proposed flood hazard determinations shown on the preliminary FIRM and/or Flood Insurance Study report for Essex County. These flood hazard determinations are the basis for the floodplain management measures that Montclair is required to adopt in order remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.”
Those interested in viewing a map of the floodplain delineations can review them at the Department of Planning and Community Development, located at 205 Claremont Avenue and at the Engineering Bureau, located at 219 North Fullerton Avenue. Comments must be addressed to: The Honorable Robert Jackson, Mayor, Township of Montclair, Municipal Building, 205 Claremont Avenue, 1st Floor, Montclair, NJ 07042.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is part of the United States Department of Homeland Security on April 1, 1979. The agency’s primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities. The governor of the state in which the disaster occurs must declare a state of emergency and formally request from the president that FEMA and the federal government respond to the disaster. FEMA also provides these services for territories of the United States, such as Puerto Rico.
