Joe Walsh comes home.
Joe Walsh has a pretty impressive resume: Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, exceptional guitarist, member of the 70’s most famous rock band the Eagles and Montclair High School graduate. It’s been about 50 years since he claimed his diploma, but on Saturday, Oct. 3, Walsh is coming back to his roots to play a benefit concert in the town he says he spent “one of [his] favorite parts of [his] life.”
The day before the performance on Friday, Walsh will be speaking at the high school at an assembly in his honor held for all the students. Then, he is set to perform a concert to benefit Montclair High School and the MFEE (Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence), which will take place in the school’s auditorium. Tickets have already gone on sale in early September, and are expected to sell out quickly, so if you want a pair you better act now! They range anywhere from $50-$200, and for more information on the pre-dinner party and how to get tickets, you can visit the MFEE webpage at mfee.org. Tickets to the concert are sold out, but Walsh fans are encouraged to purchase tickets to the pre-dinner party to still get a part of the action and give back to the MFEE.
The MFEE is an organization whose goal is to “generate private funding and community support for Montclair Public Schools and to enhance the educational experience of all of Montclair’s public school students.” Proceeds from the event will go towards school library innovations in order to transform it into a new state-of-the-art media center.
Everyone is very excited for this Joe Walsh event, but this isn’t the only time Walsh has revisited his roots in New Jersey. He has returned for high school reunions, to play in the high school’s Grid Iron Club golf tournament, as well as to visit his brothers, who live close by in Clifton and Nutley. In addition, he funds a scholarship at the high school which is co-named for himself and William McClellan, who was the former music director.
As a teenager who started off in the school’s marching band playing the clarinet and oboe, Walsh went on to teach himself guitar and later became the creator of some of rock’s classic riffs. Those that are most notable are included in his solo hits, “Rocky Mountain Way” and “Life’s Been Good.” His most famous work with the Eagles includes “Life in the Fast Lane,” which he co-wrote.
