This past weekend, the American Iris Society Convention held an Iris sale at the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens on Upper Mountain Ave. in Montclair.

At the sale, interested buyers were able to pick from a selection of convention iris. The event was held on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Each iris was named with a photo so interested buyers could pick and choose which pink, orange, yellow, purple, blue, red or white iris that they wanted to take home with them. All iris’ were sold bare-root which means they are dormant and not actively growing until planted. As for prices, each tall bearded iris priced out to $20 and the median bearded iris’ were priced at $10.

The median bearded iris reaches a height of 16 to 28 inches while the tall bearded iris has a six inch bloom on a stem that reaches over 29 inches high. The tall bearded iris is available in every color of the spectrum.

“The Presby Memorial Iris Gardens is my favorite thing about living in the community of Montclair,” said resident Linda Walsh. “My children and husband brought me here [Presby Memorial Iris Gardens] on Mother’s Day in May when the iris’ first started blooming. Now, they are selling them fully bloomed and I knew I had to get my hands on one. They [American Iris Society and Presby Memorial Iris Gardens] really does a good job at putting events like this together.”

The Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, located at 474 Upper Mountain Ave., is known for their public iris garden that contains about 1,500 iris varieties that produce over 100,000 blooms each May. Starting May 12 through June 3, bloom seasons begins, which means blooming has just finished and is the perfect time to pick up a bearded iris!
