Jimmy John’s, located at 58 Church St. in Montclair, offers a wide variety of delicious sandwiches and other treats that seem to have people drooling. The first Jimmy John’s opened in January 1983 in Charleston in a two car garage that had been remodeled into a pizza joint. Jimmy John, alongside his father, owned 52 percent of the company up until May of 1986 when he bought out his father and Jimmy John’s was all his. What first started in an abandoned pizza place turned into 160 Jimmy John’s throughout the United States. Although 70 of the 160 stores were failing, it only took 18 months to turn around those stores which saved 63 of them and left for only seven to be closed down.

Although Jimmy John’s offers the customization of nearly any sandwich you are craving, some of their specials include “Pepe,” which has real applewood smoked ham and provolone cheese garnished with lettuce, tomato and mayo, the “Big John,” which has roast beef, topped with mayo, lettuce and tomato, the “Vito” that has genoa salami, provolone, capicola, onion, lettuce, tomato and an Italian vinaigrette as well as the “Turkey Tom” which has sliced turkey breast, lettuce, tomato and mayo.

Jimmy John’s also caters to non-meat eaters, offering their “Vegetarian” sandwich which includes layers of provolone cheese separated by avocado spread, sliced cucumber, lettuce, tomato and mayo.

And if you’re really hungry, they have a colossal sandwich called the “J.J. Gargantuan” which has genoa salami, capicola, smoked ham, roast beef, turkey breast, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and Italian dressing on fresh-baked French bread.

Jimmy John’s recently held their customer appreciation special on Thursday, April 21, where all sandwiches were only $1. This promotion was offered to show appreciation to customers all over the United States. Lines piled out the door with customers who were willing to wait nearly quadruple the time that it would normally take to consume one of Jimmy John’s delicacies.

“I’ll wait 10 minutes for a Jimmy John’s sandwich or a half hour!” said customer Billy Walkers. “There’s just nothing like it – you can tell the meat is always fresh, the bread is always soft and the best part is that the customer service is always amazing.”
