John Herrmann Becomes Fire Chief

John Herrmann was recently appointed as the new fire chief of Montclair. He will be replacing Chief Kevin Allen who retired on March 1.

Current Township Manager Marc Dashield has appointed Deputy Fire Chief John Herrmann as Montclair’s new fire chief, according to a statement from Montclair. Herrmann has been in the department for 33 years and will be sworn in later this month, replacing former Chief Kevin Allen who recently retired on March 1.

Marc Dashield also stated in the report that John Herrmann was selected after reviewing multiple candidates for the position, and that he was selected for his “outstanding leadership abilities.” John Herrmann has also stated that he will bring great service to the community through his position and looks forward to moving the department forward.

John Herrmann has been Deputy Chief since 2004 and has also served as the Montclair’s Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator since 2013. Having received numerous commendations including a bronze Medal of Honor from the New Jersey FMBA, Hermann was honored with a Valor Award and named 2008 Fireman of the Year by the Essex County Emerald Society.

The Township of Montclair’s Fire Department Headquarters is located at 1 Pine Street in Montclair, and has multiple fire stations also located in the town. Two of the stations are located at 588 Valley Road and 151 Harrison Avenue.

According to the city of Montclair’s website, the Montclair Fire Department’s motto is “Privilege to Serve, Duty to Protect.” The department is “dedicated to providing [the] community with professional, courteous and proficient service; to protecting life, property and the environment; and to creating a safe environment in which to live and work by investing in education, training and innovative thinking.”

They also strive to their duties in a professional manner, “demonstrating proficiency and courteous behavior while conforming to a high standard of conduct.”
