The English Beat brings the UK to Montclair.
The English Beat, known as the Beat in Britain and the British Beat in Australia, are making their way to the Wellmont Stage on Friday, Sept. 19 for a show featuring the English Beat, Dishwalla, Stroke 9 and Nine Days. The English Beat features Dave Wakeling on vocals/guitar, Ranking Roger on vocals, Andy Cox on guitar, David Steele on bass, Everett Morton on drums and Saxa on Saxophone.
Their sound can be described as ska, new wave and post-punk. The English Beat was formed in England in the 70s during a period of widespread unemployment and social unrest in Britain. They then broke up in 1983 until they unsuccessfully tried to re-unite the original lineup in 2003. In 2006, the UK version of the English Beat recorded a new album.
Now, Dave Wakeling fronts the US version of the group as the English Beat. The singer and his band have experience in Britain as well; they flew over to the UK in 2011 to perform at the London International Ska Festival at the Clapham Grand music venue.
Tickets start at $25 and are available online at livenation.com or at the Wellmont Theater box office. The Wellmont Theater is located right off Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair. Parking is available across from the venue, but is limited. Concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early for a spot, but additional parking is also available on sidestreets and along Bloomfield Avenue. The show starts at 8 p.m. but doors open at 7 p.m., so be sure to get there early!
If you’re looking for food before or after the show, be sure to check out the many options that are located right by the Wellmont. One great choice is Ah Pizz, a delicious pizzeria right off of Bloomfield on North Willow Street. Ah Pizz offers amazing choices in pizzas and Italian-style dishes, and is a BYOB restaurant. Be sure to make a night out of the performance and stop by Ah Pizz to make it one unforgettable evening.
