Summer Activities That Beat The Heat

Summer plans don’t have to break a sweat! 

It’s never too early to plan your summer schedule. School’s out for the kids in less than a month and usually, it’s a lot of work to keep them occupied. This year, it doesn’t have to be. Take advantage of Montclair’s assets that make the day enjoyable for all ages.

1. Swim at the YMCA

There are two convenient YMCA locations in Montclair; one is the Park Street Branch, located at 25 Park St., and the other is the Geyer Family Branch, located at 159 Glen Ridge Ave. Both have large, underground pools for members to enjoy, along with a multitude of activities, classes, and programs for people of all ages to keep your summer body fit and cool. Their mission is simple, “The YMCA of Montclair is a not-for-profit organization that welcomes all people. 2. Visit the Montclair Farmer’s Market

The Montclair Farmer’s Market, located in the Walnut Street Station parking lot, opens for summer business on June 6. Their business hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday (a perfect start to a hot summer morning). The Market will be running all summer and even through the fall season, coming to an end at Thanksgiving. This year’s produce is in part by five local farmers: Tree-Licious Orchards, Sunden Farms, Vacchiano’s, Matarazzo’s, and Farmer John. All items are reasonably priced. Everybody needs a refreshing drink in the summer time, make it nutritious and transform the fresh fruit into an ice cold smoothie in no time that is sure to cool you down in the summer heat. 3. Window Shop

Public buildings always tend to keep the air conditioning at a high, and even if you don’t intend on buying anything (you’ve still got that summer vacation to pay for), you can still take advantage of the free cool air while having a nice day on the town with friends and family. The Montclair Center is packed with clothing boutiques, antique shops, bookstores and everything in between. Located between Bloomfield Ave. and Church St., the center’s website has a visitor-friendly page here that gives directions on how to arrive by train, bus, or car.
