For their four-week internship through Montclair High School’s Career Internship Program, Rebecca Brownsword, Caitlin Kennedy, Natalie Toth and Maddy Firkser worked for the Montclair Dispatch. The Montclair Dispatch is a weekly printed by local business, Studio 042. These seniors were lucky enough to obtain this opportunity thanks to Caitlin Kennedy’s father -the publisher of the Dispatch– Scott Kennedy.
Each senior has their own responsibility in order to interview fellow seniors on their internships, take their photo, and then write an article about them. Toth is the editor, Kennedy is the publisher, Brownsword is the photographer and Firkser is the interviewer and writer.
This internship was highly beneficial to all the students involved. “I learned how to communicate with others because we had to be to be talking to each other, people at 042 and then people we were interviewing,” commented Brownsword. “This internship has given me an opportunity to be productive in the real world, outside of high school and manage my time within the internship,” added Kennedy.
During high school, Brownsword was president of the Jewish Student Union club and was apart of the Civics and Government small learning community. Toth, Kennedy and Firkser were all active members of the School of Visual and Performing Arts’ Tech Crew.
All four seniors plan to start college next year. Brownsword will go to Colorado University, Boulder. Kennedy will attend Kenyon College. Toth is going to Tulane University and Firkser will start at Bard College.
All of the girls advise up-and-coming high school seniors to give themselves time to complete college essays and applications for an enjoyable senior year.
