This past weekend I had the great pleasure of dining at Cuban Petes in downtown Montclair. If it’s not the amazing aromas that are coming out of the kitchen, it’s the authentic feel of actually being in a Cuban town as you walk up to the restaurant.

Cuban Petes is located at 428 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, it doesn’t look like much from the outside, but as soon as you walk up the plank walkway you are immediately hit with Caribbean music and colorful buildings surrounding you. With music by legends like Tito Nieves and Franky Ruiz greeting you through this walkway, you automatically felt as though you stepped into Cuba. This scene gives you an overwhelming feeling that it makes you want to just break out and dance salsa.

When you first walk in through the front door, you are immediately greeted by the great staff that work there. There is plenty of seating and they have always found me and my company seats quickly with minimal waiting time. The next best thing to being seated is getting the menus and seeing their great selection of amazing authentic Cuban food. Their selection is in Spanish but don’t be discouraged from this because every selection is describe in English below.

On my first pass of the menu I was amazed at the great assortment of tantalizing choices they had. In the end I went with my usual that has never disappointed me and has always came out perfectly. My order consisted of an appetizer called Pernil Con Tostones, which is crispy pork with fried plantains and garlic mojo.

For my main course, I ordered my favorite, Ropa Vieja, which was shredded pork served with white rice, fried plantains and black beans on the side. Both of these dishes came out perfect! The portion size for the main course was very generous and the sweet plantains made my mouth water as soon as they hit the table. Everything was cooked perfectly, the pork was made just right, the rice tasted amazing and the plantains were sweet yet pleasantly crunchy and not overdone. All the flavors combined sent my taste buds on a trip and has kept me coming back since the first time I tasted their great food.

For a night out with the friends, a significant other or just grabbing lunch I would definitely recommend to give Cuban Petes a try.
