Demetri Martin at the Wellmont for one night only.
The comedic great Demetri Martin is making a stop at the Wellmont Theatre for a one-night-only show on Sunday, March 1 during his East Coast comedy tour The Persistence of Jokes.
A New Jersey native hailing from Toms River, Martin is considered a veteran in the comedy industry, compiling a resume many entertainers aspire to accomplish. His credentials include writing for such shows as Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Daily Show, before exploding onto the scene with his own unique blend of humor in the early 2000’s. Comedy Central quickly jumped at the chance to work with the rising star and gave him his own one-hour comedy special, along with a two-season run on Important Things With Demetri Martin.
Despite a brief absence from television, Martin returns to the stage with new material but maintains the same style of comedy that made him famous. Similar to his televisions specials, Martin brilliantly weaves between classic stand-up material and observational humor. His go-to props are usually a whiteboard (to draw poor interpretations of situations he is making fun of) or a guitar (to serenade audiences with clever songs). His comedy routine is more modern than usual entertainers, as he tells a ten-minute story build-up before the punch. His use of props and musical instruments foreshadow the migration of comedy to a more captivating, audience-interactive experience.
If you’re looking to grab a bite to eat before the show, a great restaurant is Cuban Pete’s, located just a few buildings up Bloomfield Ave from the Wellmont. It’s an energetic eatery famous for its authentic Cuban dishes, huge pitchers of fresh Sangria and friendly staff. The atmosphere transports you from the cold weather of New Jersey to the tropical paradise of Cuba.
Tickets for The Persistence of Joke’s can be purchased on livenation.com or at the Wellmont Theater and start at $52 – quite a bargain in comparison to most high-profile comedy shows. The Wellmont Theatre is located right off of Bloomfield and Seymour Street in Montclair. The show starts out 7:30 p.m., but doors open at 6:30 p.m. Be sure to arrive early for parking behind the Wellmont Theatre. Additional parking is available at the garage behind Church Street. This is Demetri Martin’s final stop in the Tri-State area folks; so don’t miss your last chance to see one of the best comedians in the industry live!
