Double 06 loves a challenge as much as they love MFEE!
Both Syreeta Carrington and Margaret Whitsett, teach at Glenfield Middle School. Carrington teaches Sixth Grade Social Studies and Whitsett is an in-class support teacher in Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. They have worked on the same team together for the last 5 years.
“We are very familiar with MFEE. In fact, Margaret currently sits on the board of MFEE and has done so for the past 17 years. Margaret participated in last year’s 2016 Fundracer and I supported her team and came out to watch,” said Carrington.
Carrington lives with her husband in West Orange, better known as “in the shadow of Montclair” to her. They’re close enough to experience all that Montclair has to offer, including the rich diversity of everything from residents to restaurants and yet still far enough away where they can enjoy the distance. Carrington truly loves the special town of Montclair, especially the public school system. She attended public schools over the years that experienced an increasing level of de facto segregation so she’s truly blessed to have the opportunity to teach young people of different cultures, ethnicity and backgrounds because there’s nothing else quite like it.
“I really had no intention of participating this year beyond supporting other teams or watching the event but I reached out to Masiel Rodriquez-Vars, whom I adore, concerning something completely unrelated and as it turns out, she’d wanted to ask me if I would consider participating. The next thing I knew, I was asking Margaret to be my partner for the race,” smiled Carrington.
Double 06 expects tons of fun, since both team members are so familiar with one another. They really know how to make each other laugh. Carrington mentioned, that also expects to exert herself harder than normally as she can’t recall the last time being on a bike other than an ill-fated turn at spinning about 25 years ago. However, don’t overlook her team spirit within the competition as she may just surprise you!
Double 06 believe that it would be worthwhile for MFEE to invest in programming around social/emotional development. It should be centered around helping young people to navigate in a world dominated by social media. The unstoppable duo is fully aware that the various social media platforms have the power to transform in any number of positive ways, but at the same time social media can also be a tool of destructive power.
