One of the biggest summer holidays is almost here! It’s time to start preparing for the barbecues, fireworks and patriotic celebrations that make up the Fourth of July. The township of Montclair recently announced their own plans for their 65th annual Independence Day Celebration.

The day will begin with a parade on Saturday, July 4 at 11 a.m., which will start at Bloomfield and South Fullerton Avenues. According to the Montclair website, “Joining us this year will be the Philadelphia Mummers’ Fralinger String Band, Wayne Raiders Drum & Bugle Corps, St. Columquille’s pipe and drum band and much, much more. The parade route is 1.6 miles traveling west on Bloomfield Avenue to Midland Avenue, continuing to Watchung Avenue, west to Valley Road and ending at Edgemont Park where immediately following will be a Family Picnic.”

The Fourth of July parade will happen rain or shine, but if there is rain the picnic will be canceled. This year, the family picnic will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Edgemont Park. The picnic will feature a barbeque by Church Street Catering, music by Victoria Skie and Cinya Khan, magician Joe Fischer, pony rides, face painting, spin art and sand art.

There will also be fireworks that evening at the Yogi Berra Stadium, located on the campus of Montclair State University near the Car Parc Diem parking deck. Gates open at 7 p.m., and admission is $3 per person or $10 per family, and free for children five and under. There is free parking at the Car Parc Diem deck and at the Red Hawk Parking Deck. Concession stands will be open, and no outside food, water or other beverages are permitted to be brought into the stadium.

Before the Fourth of July fireworks display, button sales will be available at:

– Montclair Recreation,  205 Claremont Ave., Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
– Investors Bank, 536 Bloomfield Ave.
– Kings Supermarket, 650  Valley Rd.
– Keils Pharmacy, 732 Valley Rd.
– Grove Pharmacy, 123 Grove St.
– Yogi Berra Stadium the night of the event starting at 7:00 p.m.

In the event of bad weather, the parade will take place but the picnic and fireworks will be cancelled. Be sure to check the websites for up-to-date information about any necessary cancellations.

The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade is Celia Triggs Honohan. According to the event’s website, Honohan “has a deep connection to Montclair. She was born and raised on Midland Avenue. She was baptized at St. Cassian’s Church and received her First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Sacrament of Marriage at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. She attended kindergarten at Edgemont School and grammar and high school at Immaculate, where her mother worked as a school nurse and five of her eight siblings attended. She holds a BA in Business from Marymount Manhattan College and an MA in Educational Theatre from the Steinhardt School of Education at NYU.”
