Johari pushes up expectations for women!
Johari is a unique boutique with an even more unique motto: Johari specializes in making you feel good about the skin you are in. Johari rejects beauty and body norms to create an private environment that is both comfortable and inspiring. The shop has been in business for 17 years at 465 Bloomfield Ave.
Owner Deborah Furr always loved to shop for lingerie and swimwear. The fashion guru graduated from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in 1991. For the past 38 years, Furr has worked in retail for Newport News Catalog, Lerner Catalog and Alexander’s Department Store. She had the entrepreneurial spirit and knew she wanted a career in retail, but needed a little push to get there. And what’s wrong with a little push?
“I was prompted to fulfill my dream of ownership by getting a severance package. I decided to invest in myself and open the first Johari in Montclair Center, where there was a need for a boutique that offered locals a great selection of lingerie and swimwear,” Furr said.
Johari works with each customer individually to ensure a correct fitting. Johari’s expert employees fit customers for the correct bra size, either for the first time or to re-measure (sometimes the girls grow!). Johari also offers breast augmentation and fittings for nursing bras. Special occasion fitting services include shape wear, nylons and strapless bras.
Johari carries sizes not commonly found in department stores or even online. Johari’s bra sizes range from A to K and band sizes start at 28. Swim tops go up to a J cup.
“Over the years working with thousands of women, we have found the initial items selected may not be what you ultimately purchase. Sometimes being open and willing to try a new style may surprise you,” said Furr. Online shopping can’t provide an expert (and honest) bra fitter like Johari does.
Furr hopes that Johari will attract customers and support, and she is grateful that the word of mouth has encouraged new clients to come into her downtown store. Furr has enjoyed working with all her clients in the area.
Hurry in to get something sweet – or spicy – so you can feel comfortable and confident. Johari can be found at 465 Bloomfield Ave. or visit joharionline.com.
