Montclair High School’s Career Internship Program has given Keely Tierney and James McCarthy the opportunity to revisit their alma mater, Glenfield Middle School. Keely Tierney works in the social studies, science and math departments while James McCarthy works with the English classes.
For their internship, these seniors have basically become teachers for their respective subjects. “I tell the students how to improve in their writing,” said McCarthy. “I grade essays, ans we do writing workshops.”
In addition to being their former teachers’ aides, these seniors also work with students with special needs. “During ‘ninth period’ there is a class for kids who have learning disabilities and we work one on one with the kids,” said Keely Tierney.
The seniors believe that this internship has been a beneficial experience for many reasons. “It really has helped me grow as a person,” said James McCarthy. “[The internship has helped me] learn my strengths and weaknesses. I feel like an adult in the workforce.”
Throughout her time at Montclair High School, Keely Tierney was a member of the softball and track teams. Keely Tierney also maintained the leadership positions of captain of the field hockey team and president of Covenant Club. James McCarthy was a member of the National Honors Society and Key Club. This summer both seniors plan to work as camp counselors, Keely Tierney at New Discoveries Camp and James McCarthy at Frost Valley.
Next fall, Keely Tierney will attend Kean University at which she will play varsity field hockey and will study communications. James McCarthy will attend University of Massachusetts Amherst and plans to major in marketing and international business and minor in German.
